Sports, Sports, and More Sports in Tucson This Week

So many sporting events are happening in Tucson this week:

Up north in Marana, AZ the World Golf Championship’s Accenture Match Play is taking place at the Ritz Carlton Golf Course at Dove Mountain and is hosting the world’s top 64 players in an exciting head-to-head competition.

In the heart of Tucson at the Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium, the Desert Diamond Cup Tournament is hosting four Major League Soccer (MLS) teams: LA Galaxy, New England Revolution, New York Red Bulls, and Real Salt Lake. Many soccer stars will be in Tucson including David Beckham and Thierry Henry.

South of the soccer tournament is the La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, or known as the Tucson Rodeo. The Tucson Rodeo has been going on since 1925 and features the world top bull riders including World Champion Bull Rider Shane Proctor.

This does not include the usual local UofA sporting events including Basketball, Baseball, and Softball.

Great for the Tucson Economy!

WGC Accenture Match Play in Tucson February 20-26, 2012

Only a few weeks from now, the top golfers from around the world will be playing some competitive golf.  Why should you attend this golf tournament?  Well besides watching some amazing golf, you are helping out the youth of Arizona and the First Tee.  The Tucson Conquistadors are running this golf tournament and proceeds raised from this tournament helps out the Southern Arizona chapter of the First Tee.  The First Tee if you do not know gives kids a way to learn the game of golf and the values and honestly that comes from playing golf.  They help provide clubs to kids who normally cannot afford golf clubs and a safe clean environment for kids to play golf.  Also this golf tournament will help out the Tucson economy financially.  Plus you are outside walking a golf course in beautiful Tucson weather.  So get out and have a good walk while watching some amazing golf and support the youth of Southern Arizona.

Groundhog Day from a Tucson Perspective

So people from around the United States are tuning into that little groundhog to see whether or not winter will end soon or if winter will be extended this year.  Statistics say that Paul the groundhog is only right 39% of the time.  Honestly, poor Paul.  Every year some fat white guy in a tall hat yanks me out of my home and parades me for everyone to see while all I wanted was to sleep.

So if you live in the Southwest like I do, we really don’t care if Paul sees his shadow or not.  In Tucson, we will not get snow or sleet.  I can confidently predict the weather for the next few months.  Daytime highs anywhere from 55-75 degrees with either full sun, partly cloudy, or an isolated shower here and there.  Nighttime lows range anywhere from 35-45 degrees with either full sun, partly cloudy, or an isolated shower here and there.

So if you live in Southern California and Arizona (Phoenix and South), what Paul sees doesn’t really matter.  For the rest of you in the United States, well looks like Paul saw his shadow.  Whatever that means.

Happy Groundhog Day!
